What Is an Artificial Eye?
ما هي العين الاصطناعية؟
An artificial eye (ocular prosthesis) is a custom-made medical device that restores natural appearance after the loss of an eye due to surgery, trauma, disease, or a congenital condition. It is individually crafted to match eye color and iris pattern, socket size and shape, eyelid position and facial symmetry, and skin tone and scleral (white of the eye) detail.

Made from PMMA (Poly Methyl Methacrylate) medical acrylic, custom-molded from an exact impression of the socket for comfort, movement, and a natural appearance. The iris and sclera are hand-painted to match the healthy eye.

Cosmetic Shell

A thin prosthetic worn over a blind or shrunken eye to improve appearance only — it does not restore vision. It requires a sufficiently shrunken underlying eye, involves a more sensitive fitting process, and is not intended for permanent wear (it must be removed before sleep).

The timing of your first custom fitting varies from patient to patient — many are fitted several weeks after surgery, once your surgeon confirms the socket has healed and is ready. Coming too early can affect comfort and fit.

Fitting sessions prioritize natural appearance at conversational and social distances, with refinements guided by both medical expertise and artistic vision. Movement depends on the type of surgery and orbital implant; while the artificial eye does not restore vision, it is designed to move naturally with facial expressions, maintain eyelid position, and help maintain socket form and support facial symmetry.

Mild awareness, extra tearing, or light discharge is normal at first and usually settles within days to weeks. Most patients soon forget they are wearing a prosthesis.

Pediatric sockets grow; prostheses are enlarged or remade more frequently than in adults to support symmetric orbital and facial development.

The service life of a prosthesis varies between patients — many adults use the same prosthesis for several years, while children generally need more frequent reassessment and replacement as the orbit develops. Professional polishing every 6 months keeps it comfortable and bright between replacements.

Socket volume changes, surface crazing, persistent discharge despite polishing, or fit migration indicate re-impression and fabrication of a new prosthesis.

Your ocularist should demonstrate the correct insertion and removal technique in person before you perform it independently — this is especially important for first-time patients and children.
يجب أن يُظهر لك أخصائي العين الاصطناعية (الأوكيولاريست) الطريقة الصحيحة للإدخال والإزالة شخصياً قبل أن تقوم بذلك بمفردك — وهذا مهم بشكل خاص للمرضى الجدد والأطفال.
Clean the prosthesis only as directed by your ocularist or ophthalmologist, using the recommended cleaning method and solution — never alcohol or solvents. Wear your prosthesis according to your ocularist or ophthalmologist's instructions; some patients may wear it overnight, while others may be advised to remove it before sleep. Wear swimming goggles in pools and the sea. Use lubricating drops if dryness appears. Keep your 6-month professional polishing appointment.
نظّف العين الاصطناعية فقط وفق تعليمات أخصائي أو طبيب العيون، باستخدام طريقة ومحلول التنظيف الموصى بهما — وتجنّب الكحول والمذيبات نهائياً. ارتدِ العين الاصطناعية وفق تعليمات أخصائي أو طبيب العيون؛ فقد يُنصح بعض المرضى بالنوم والعين في مكانها، بينما يُنصح آخرون بإزالتها قبل النوم. استخدم نظارات السباحة في المسبح والبحر. استعمل قطرات مرطبة عند الجفاف. حافظ على موعد التلميع كل ٦ أشهر.
Removing the prosthesis more than necessary. Rubbing the eye area. Alcohol, solvents, chemicals, heat, or abrasive cleaners. Leaving the socket empty for long periods, which can change its shape.
إخراج العين أكثر من اللازم. فرك منطقة العين. الكحول والمذيبات والمواد الكيميائية والحرارة والمنظفات الكاشطة. ترك التجويف فارغاً لفترات طويلة لأن ذلك قد يغيّر شكله.
Persistent pain or redness, a change in discharge color, unusual odor or irritation, bleeding, or a prosthesis that suddenly no longer fits or has changed eyelid position.
ألم أو احمرار مستمر، تغيّر لون الإفرازات، رائحة غير طبيعية أو تهيج، نزيف، أو عين اصطناعية لم تعد ثابتة فجأة أو تغيّر موضع الجفن.
Contact us the same day — socket infections and fit problems are easiest to solve early. Some signs need your ophthalmologist, whom we will help you reach. Seek medical attention immediately if any of the above occur.
