Artificial Eye Information

At Yamout Optical Center, we provide customized ocular prosthetic solutions designed to restore appearance, comfort, confidence, and facial harmony. Since 1978, our work combines medical precision with artistic craftsmanship to deliver natural and reliable results.

Types of Ocular Prostheses

Artificial Eye (Ocular Prosthesis)

An artificial eye is used when a natural eye is absent due to:

  • Enucleation or evisceration
  • Eye cancer
  • Severe traumatic eye injury
  • Painful blind eye
  • Congenital absence of the eye (anophthalmos)

Artificial eyes are made from PMMA (Poly Methyl Methacrylate) medical acrylic. Each eye is custom-made from an exact mold of the socket to ensure comfort, movement, and a natural appearance. The iris and sclera are hand-painted to precisely match the healthy eye.

Cosmetic Shell

A cosmetic shell is a thin prosthetic worn over a blind or shrunken eye to improve appearance only. It does not restore vision.

  • Requires a sufficiently shrunken underlying eye
  • More sensitive fitting process
  • Not intended for permanent wear
  • Must be removed before sleep

Insertion & Removal

Insertion

  1. Wash hands thoroughly
  2. Lift upper eyelid and slide the prosthesis upward
  3. Pull down lower lid and settle the eye into position

Removal

  1. Pull down lower eyelid gently
  2. Allow the lower edge to come forward
  3. Remove using finger or suction tool

Care & Maintenance

  • Clean every 2–4 weeks with mild soap and water
  • Keep prosthesis in place during sleep
  • Avoid alcohol, chemicals, or heat
  • Professional polishing every 6 months

Warning Signs

  • Persistent redness or pain
  • Change in discharge color
  • Unusual odor or irritation
  • Change in fit or eyelid position

Seek medical attention immediately if any of the above occur.
