OUR PROCESS

1 For the best possible colour match and fit, the custom eye is unparalleled. This type of eye is manufactured step by step with each detail designed to match the companion eye.

The process begins 5-8 weeks following surgery to allow adequate time for the eye socket to heal. 2 The first of your three appointments will include a free consultation with your ocularist to discuss your experience and assess your needs.

The fitting process begins with an impression of the eye socket, to ensure optimum comfort and appearance of the artificial eye. To do this your ocularist will make an imprint of your eye socket using a soft alginate material that hardens in less than a minute. 3 Your second visit will also involve your ocularist hand painting a disk to match the colour and fine details of your companion eye.

As many as twenty coats of paint may be necessary to create all the colour striations found in the stroma of the human iris. This disk will then be glued to a clear button, containing the pupil, to simulate the anterior chamber of the natural eye.

This connected piece will then be cast within a layer of white plastic to give depth to the iris. 4 During your third visit, the final details are added to your custom artificial eye. This includes adding tiny red silk threads to the sclera of the artificial eye to simulate the vein pattern of your companion eye.

The sclera is also tinted with tones of pink, grey, blue, and yellow as needed. The final step consists of covering the eye entirely with a thin layer of clear plastic, which smoothly seals the veins and gives the appearance of the corneal dome found in the natural eye.

The prosthesis is then polished to a smooth finish and the final fitting is completed.
