Amsler Grid The Amsler Grid was devised by Professor Marc Amsler. It can detect small irregularities in the central 20 degrees of the field of vision. The chart is composed of grid lines containing a central fixation spot. The squares on the grid are 5mm in size and subtend to a visual angle of 1 degree at 30cm viewing distance.
The Amsler Grid is a useful tool in the assessment of macular degeneration. By focusing on the center dot, the image of the grid is limited to the macula (the central portion of the retina). Distortion of the grid lines indicates a disturbance in the macular region of the eye. If you experience any of the grid distortions described in the examples above, it is important that you make an appointment with your ophthalmologist for a complete retinal evaluation. Note: If you receive a take-home amsler grid from your eye doctor, it is important that you not fold or bend your grid. Bending or folding may cause distortion of the printed lines drawn on the grid and interfere with the accuracy of your test. |
